Volume 3 (2002) Number 2

During the past decade many countries of Eastern and Central Europe have experienced crucial and often shocking changes in their economies. By now the economies of the region have started on a path of rapid economic progress. However, agriculture's share of the total economy has steadily declined in most of the countries. A strange contradiction may be seen in the fact, that agricultural research is thriving, in spite of all the financial hardships and technical barriers. The management of natural resources in a productive, but also sustainable way is becoming a major focus throughout the world, which requires better information on the present state of these resources, and on the production processes utilising - and often depleting - them. Agriculture heavily relies on natural resources, such as farmland, the genetic potential of crop varieties and animal breeds, water and climatic conditions. Inefficient and wasteful use of these resources will have an impact not only on the agricultural sector but on the overall global environment.
For this very reason the evidence of creativity, originality and hard work, being manifested in the abundance of research results described in papers by researchers of the region is a cause of reassuarance, or even optimism. The present issue of JCEA contains 9 papers from 5 countries in 4 languages. Three of the papers deal with maize, one of the most important arable crops of the region, analysing the impacts of magnetic field on the biological characteristics of the plant, describing experimental results on the root development of an important grass weed of the crop, or assessing and modelling the plant-water relationships of the maize plant and its environment, respectively. This issue also presents exciting research achievements on the immunological characteristics of chicken, laboratory rearing of a reduviid predator, genetic characteristics of a pepper variety, and the impacts of daminozide and fertiliser applications on a variety of aster. There are also two management-oriented papers in this issue. One of them gives us a detailed overview of the evolution of fruit growing in Romania in the 20th century, describing the composition of orchards and the shift in varieties and yields during the time. The other paper measures the efficiency of the technical and human resources of agricultural businesses by way of the concept of entropy. These papers help to advance the state-of-the art for exciting fields of research and also raise challenging questions for future research.
