Volume 3 (2002) Number 3

The new issue of JCEA covers again, – as it has become usual by now, - a very wide area of agricultural sciences.
Four papers focus on various areas of crop production by Slovenian, Hungarian, and Bulgarian authors, including two papers on aspects of maize growing, one paper on the genetics of sunflowers, and another on the water balance of onion growing. One paper represents animal husbandry, discussing features of milk production of the Slovak spotted dairy cow breed.
Our journal has already published several papers about topics in rural development, and we intend to increasingly encourage the research of such topics in the Central and Eastern European region. The topic deserves special attention as it is closely linked to the future directions of the economic and social development of the countries in the region. We are glad to publish two papers of such interest, one by an Italian author – indicating the importance of the research area in the European Union, - and one by a team of Hungarian authors, pointing out some crucial problems of rural communities in Hungary.
Another paper, by an Indian author, discusses an exciting problem in agricultural chemistry about nitrate reductase activity. It is followed by four papers on various aspects of soil science including erosion problems in Romania, research on the soil nitrogen content by a Slovak author, a Turkish paper on the extraction of the iron content of the soil and another Romanian paper on the problem of landslides.
The present issue is rich in content and boasts of having contributions from as many as six countries, including Slovenian, Bulgarian, Slovakian, Hungarian, Italian, Indian and Turkish authors. This is really a sign of the journal gaining ground and becoming a well accepted tool of scientific communication in the Central and Eastern European region.
