Volume 4 (2003) Number 2

During the past decade many countries of Eastern and Central Europe have experienced crucial and often shocking changes in their economies. By now the economies of the region have started on a path of rapid economic progress. However, agriculture's share of the total economy has steadily declined in most of the countries. A strange contradiction may be seen in the fact that agricultural research is thriving, in spite of all the financial hardships and technical barriers. The management of natural resources in a productive, but also sustainable way is becoming a major focus throughout the world, which requires better information on the present state of these resources, and on the production processes utilizing - and often depleting - them. Agriculture heavily relies on natural resources, such as farmland, the genetic potential of crop varieties and animal breeds, water and climatic conditions. Inefficient and wasteful use of these resources will have an impact not only on the agricultural sector but also on the overall global environment.
For this very reason the evidence of creativity, originality and hard work, being manifested in the abundance of research results described in papers by researchers of the region is a cause of reassurance, or even optimism. The present issue of JCEA contains 15 papers from 6 countries in 4 languages.
This issue presents the research: water regime of the some field crops in Transylvania, water consumption of the main field crops in Transylvania, the some important properties and classification of mollisols in northwestern Turkey, the material flow on agricultural farms, phenotypic correlations between productivity elements of red clover, comparative study of the aminoacid’s true digestibility of different clover varieties in experiments with ganders, effects of excess cu on growth and photosynthesis of barley plants, the structural problems in hungarian agriculture after the political turnover, the assessment of Rhynocoris marginatus as augmented control in groundnut pests, the influence of stationary magnetic field on the early stages of the development of tobacco seeds (Nicotiana tabacum L.), the actual stage the knowledge about the damages bruchides, chemical control of bean weevil in storage condition, control of the coleopteres in stored agricultural products by not-chemical methods, a study on Meligethes species in Keszthely, the importance of the standard sample for accurate estimation of the concentration of net energy for lactation in feeds on the basis of gas produced during the incubation of samples with rumen liquor, evaluation of meat production of czech pied bulls in fattening control stations with reference to relative breeding values of milk and meat production of sires, economic efficiency of various queen bees maintenance systems, using corn distiller’s grain and rice bran in the nutrition of laying hens and its economic impact, study on a high performance integrated beekeeping technology, economic evaluation of a breeding programmed for setting up two high performance bee lines, using full fat soybean in broiler diets and its effect on the production and economic efficiency of fattening.
These papers help to advance the state-of-the art for exciting fields of research and also raise challenging questions for future research.
